Refuge alpe Selle

Rifugio Alpe Selle sits at 1,860m on the Alpe Selle plateau in the Pennine Alps, above the Val d'Aosta. Reach it from the village of Gressoney-La-Trinité by hiking 2 hours up a well-marked trail through pasture and larch forest. The approach is steady and straightforward, gaining about 600m elevation. Most trekkers use this rifugio as a base for day walks across the plateau or as a stopping point on multi-day routes through the southern Wallis.

The hut sleeps around 40 people in shared dormitory rooms. The kitchen serves hot meals at dinner and packed lunches for those heading out early. Facilities include drinking water from the mountain spring and flush toilets—basic but functional. The hut operates from June through September, closing during winter and spring snow. Staff can usually accommodate late arrivals if you warn them in advance.

Book directly by email or phone, especially for weekends and July–August when the hut fills quickly. Phone ahead a day or two before arrival to confirm they have space and to place a dinner order. The hut sits on a working dairy pasture, so expect livestock and pastoral atmosphere rather than isolation. Cell signal is unreliable but usually works near the hut building itself.
