About

Chemnitzer Hütte sits at 2,420m in the Zillertal Alps on the border between Trentino and South Tyrol. Reach it from Mayrhofen in Austria's Zillertal (about 1.5 hours by car from Innsbruck). Most hikers approach from Ginzling via the Zillertal: walk up to Schlegeispeicher dam (90 minutes) then follow the path alongside the reservoir and over scree to the hut (another 2.5 hours). The trail is steep in sections but straightforward. In winter and early spring, check conditions—the approach crosses avalanche terrain.

The hut operates year-round and beds around 60 people in mixed and private rooms. Half-board is standard: dinner, overnight and breakfast included. The kitchen serves simple mountain food—hearty pasta, stews, schnitzel. Request packed lunches when you book. Showers are available but hot water is limited. The hut has a small bar and comfortable common room. Mobile signal is poor.

Book through rifugi.net or contact the hut directly. July and August fill fast—reserve by May. September is quieter and often has better weather. The hut sits at the junction of several longer routes: the Zillertal high route passes through, making it useful as a multi-day base. Staff speak German and English.

Frequently Asked Questions

Book 2–3 weeks ahead for summer weekends, earlier for July/August. Reserve through rifugio.net, the hut's website, or contact the CAI/SAT directly; this hut straddles the Trentino-Alto Adige border, so check both regional Alpine club systems.
Typically open June through September, with limited staffing in shoulder months; winter access is unreliable due to avalanche risk on the approach, so confirm conditions before traveling October–May.
Start from Ginzling in the Zillertal: 90 minutes to Schlegeispeicher dam, then 2.5 hours along the reservoir and over scree to the hut—about 4 hours total, gaining roughly 800m elevation with steep sections.
Expect 40–60 beds in mixed dorms, basic shower facilities (sometimes cold-water only), and hearty half-board dinners and breakfasts; bring a sleeping bag liner.
Suitable for fit hikers comfortable with steep, scree terrain and basic mountain hut conditions; the approach isn't technical but demands steady legs and sure footing, so not ideal for young children or inexperienced walkers.
