About

Rifugio Antermoia stands at 2,496 m in the lonely Vallon d'Antermoia, the high valley hidden behind the main Catinaccio (Rosengarten) ridge above Mazzin in Val di Fassa. It is the only hut in the valley and sits just a few metres from Lago d'Antermoia, a milky-blue tarn beneath the Catinaccio d'Antermoia (3,002 m), the highest summit of the group. Built by the Società degli Alpinisti Tridentini (SAT) in 1911, enlarged in 1982 and recently renovated, the hut is still SAT property and is run by Martin Riz, with 62 beds in dormitories and family rooms plus a winter room. It opens from mid-June to late September or early October. No lift reaches this side of the Catinaccio, so every approach is a genuine walk: from Mazzin through the Val Udai and over Passo di Dona on path 580 (about 3.5 hours), from Campitello di Fassa through the Val Duron via Rifugio Micheluzzi (paths 532/578/580, about 3.5 hours), or across the range from Gardeccia and the Vajolet valley over Passo Principe and the 2,770 m Passo d'Antermoia — the classic, demanding stage of the Catinaccio traverse.

The classic Catinaccio crossing: from Gardeccia (1,950 m) up the Vajolet valley on path 546 past Rifugio Vajolet and Passo Principe, then over the steep, scree-covered 2,770 m Passo d'Antermoia on path 584.

Frequently Asked Questions

Book with hut keeper Martin Riz by phone (+39 0462 602272 or +39 333 6656311), by email at [email protected], or through the online booking page on rifugioantermoia.com. The hut offers dormitory places and family rooms for 3-5 people.
The hut operates in summer only, typically from mid-June (around 20 June in some years, 12 June in others) until late September or early October. A winter room is available outside the season. Confirm exact dates with the hut before travelling.
There is no cable car access. The most direct route climbs from Mazzin (1,372 m) in Val di Fassa through the Val Udai and over Passo di Dona on path 580, about 3.5 hours. The approach from Campitello through the gentle Val Duron takes a similar time.
Reasonably fit walkers and older children will manage the Val Udai or Val Duron approaches, which are long but non-technical mountain paths. The crossing from the Vajolet side over Passo d'Antermoia involves steep scree and short protected sections and is better left to experienced hikers.
The recently renovated hut serves home-style Trentino and Ladin cooking with half-board available, and sleeps 62 in dormitories and family rooms. Its lakeside setting behind the Catinaccio ridge makes it a favourite overnight stop on multi-day Rosengarten circuits.
