Rifugio Fanes (Ücia de Fanes, 2,060 m) sits on the Fanes plateau near Passo Limo in the Fanes-Senes-Braies Nature Park, in the municipality of San Vigilio di Marebbe, South Tyrol (province of Bolzano). Opened in 1928 and still privately run by the Ladin Mutschlechner family, it stands at the heart of the mythical Kingdom of Fanes, the most famous of the Dolomites' Ladin legends, and is a classic overnight stop on Alta Via 1 between Rifugio Biella and Lagazuoi. The comfortable hut sleeps around 70 guests in rooms and small dorms, serves Ladin and South Tyrolean cooking, and shares its high meadow with the neighbouring Rifugio Lavarella and the small Lé Vërt lake. The summer season runs from early June to mid-October, with a separate winter season when the hut is reached by ski tour, snowshoe or snowcat shuttle. The easiest approach follows the old military track from Pederü (1,548 m) above San Vigilio in about 2 hours (a jeep shuttle is available for overnight guests); from Capanna Alpina near San Cassiano, path 11 crosses Col de Locia and Gran Fanes to Passo Limo in about 2.5–3 hours.
