Rifugio Paul Preuss

Rifugio Paul Preuss sits at 2243m on the Alpstein massif in the Appenzell Alps, eastern Switzerland. Reach it from Säntis by traversing the Säntisalp plateau—allow 3 hours from the Säntis summit. The hut is also accessible from Schwägalp via the Schäfler route in roughly 2.5 hours. Both approaches are well-marked hiking trails; scrambling sections are minimal. The hut stands alone on high moorland with 360-degree views across the limestone peaks and down to the lowlands.

The hut accommodates 7 people in simple alpine accommodation. Beds are basic dormitory style. The kitchen serves hearty regional food; half-board and self-catering are both available. Flush toilets are a rarity at this elevation. There is no shower. Water comes from the mountain spring. The hut operates from late May through October, weather permitting. Reception staff manage booking in person.

Contact the hut directly for bed availability and meal reservations. July and August fill quickly—book 6-8 weeks ahead if targeting these months. June and September-October see lighter pressure. Day visitors can stop for food without prior notice, though alerting the hut ensures meals are ready. Winter closure is firm; the hut stands unheated and unstaff from November to May.
