Gomiščkovo Shelter na Krnu

Gomiščkovo Zavetišče sits at 2182m on Krn, a serious peak in the western Julian Alps. Reach it from the Krn Saddle (Krnski preval) trailhead near Tolmin. Most parties hike 2–2.5 hours from the saddle, gaining roughly 400m. The path is well-marked but steep and rocky in places. This is not a casual walk—bring proper boots. Winter access requires mountaineering experience and avalanche awareness.

The shelter operates year-round and sleeps 42 people in shared rooms. The PZS-affiliated hut (managed by PD Nova Gorica) provides basic mountain meals and hot drinks. Water comes from a reliable source nearby. Facilities are minimal—standard mountain accommodation with no shower or electricity. This is a working alpine hut, not a resort. Most visitors are climbers and hikers tackling routes in the western Julian Alps. Summer is the main season, though winter mountaineers use it as a base for ski touring and ice climbing.

Book directly by phone well ahead for July and August—the hut fills completely. June, September, and early October see fewer visitors but still require advance notice.
