Planinski Lodge Tamar

Planinski Dom Tamar sits at 1108m in the Tamar Valley, a tributary basin in the Julian Alps above the village of Kobarid. The hut anchors the northern section of the Soča Valley trail network. Most hikers reach it from Kobarid village (45 minutes, 400m ascent) via a well-marked path that climbs through beech forest. You can also approach from Tolmin or via the ridge trails linking to Kobarid. The location works well as a base for day walks into the surrounding limestone peaks or as a waypoint on longer Julian Alps traverses.
The lodge is run by PZS and holds 51 beds spread across multiple rooms. Hot meals and packed lunches are available if you book ahead. The hut has a small shop for snacks and essentials, though stocks are limited. Water comes from a reliable mountain spring. The hut opens year-round, though staffing and meal service are reduced outside the summer season (May–September). You'll need a sleeping bag for the basic rooms, though some heated private rooms exist in peak season.
Book directly by email or phone at least two weeks ahead for July and August weekends. Spring and autumn are quieter but still popular with weekend hikers. The warden speaks German and Slovene; basic English is possible. Phone ahead in winter (November–March) to confirm opening and food availability, as the hut operates on limited hours during this period.
