Rifugio Luigi Zacchi

Rifugio Luigi Zacchi sits at 1,380m in the Julian Alps, accessible via hiking routes from the Vršič Pass area. The hut serves as a base for traversing this high karst plateau and accessing neighboring peaks. Most approaches take 2–3 hours on marked trails from valley trailheads. The location works well for multi-day trips linking into the broader Julian Alps network.
The rifugio has 20 beds split across simple rooms. Meals are available if pre-ordered. Water comes from a spring; the hut runs on minimal infrastructure suited to alpine conditions. Open from June through September, it closes during winter and shoulder seasons when snow makes access unreliable. Facilities are basic—expect no heating, no electricity beyond battery systems, and pit toilets. This is a working mountain hut, not a hostel.
Contact the hut directly by phone or email to check availability and arrange meals at least one week ahead. July and August fill quickly; book 4–6 weeks in advance for those months. June and September have better availability but face weather variability at this elevation. Groups larger than 8 should confirm capacity well ahead. The hut manager can advise on current trail conditions and safe descent options if weather deteriorates.
