Vodnikov Lodge na Velem Polju
4.2Vodnikov Dom na Velem Polju
About
Vodnikov dom na Velem polju (1,817 m) sits on a terrace above Velo polje, a broad high pasture in the heart of the Triglav massif, within Triglav National Park in Slovenia's Julian Alps. It stands beneath the slopes of Tosc and Vernar on the Bohinj side of the range, and is run by the Srednja vas v Bohinju branch of the Alpine Association of Slovenia (PZS). The hut takes its name from the poet and mountaineer Valentin Vodnik; a hut has stood on this pasture since 1895, with the present building dating from 1958.
Because Velo polje lies on classic approaches from Pokljuka and Bohinj toward Triglav, it is a popular first-night base for climbing Slovenia's highest peak, as well as a rest stop on hut-to-hut traverses. It has a 50-seat dining room serving meals and drinks, around 22 beds in rooms plus roughly 30 places in shared bunkrooms, and a winter room available when the hut is closed. Wardening normally runs from mid-June to the end of September. From here the higher Dom Planika is about two hours on, with the Triglav summit roughly three hours beyond. Advance booking is strongly recommended in peak summer.

It is staffed from about mid-June to the end of September. Outside those months the hut is closed, but a winter room (roughly 10 places) remains accessible for self-service use.
The shortest approach is from the end of the road on the Pokljuka plateau — about 3 hours on well-marked, mostly gentle paths. The Bohinj/Stara Fuzina approach up the Voje valley is far longer, close to 5 hours.
Yes — the Pokljuka and Uskovnica approaches are non-technical hikes on marked trails, making it a good hut for reasonably fit walkers. The longer valley approaches (Voje, Krma) demand more stamina but no climbing skills.
Yes. Velo polje sits on common Bohinj- and Pokljuka-side routes to Triglav, so the hut is a frequent first-night staging point; from here Dom Planika is about 2 hours and the Triglav summit roughly 3 hours further.
