Combioz

Combioz sits at 1,305m in the Valais region, above the village of Evolène in the Val d'Hérémence. Reach it on foot in 2–2.5 hours from Evolène via a well-marked trail that climbs steadily through mixed forest and Alpine pasture. The hut also functions as a base for approaches to peaks in the Chamonix Aiguilles and access to the Combaz Pass (2,413m), a useful crossing into adjacent valleys. The location works well as an overnight stop on longer mountain traverses or for acclimatization hikes.
The SAC-managed hut has around 40 beds in shared dormitories. Meals are served daily—expect straightforward mountain cooking with vegetarian options. Hot showers are available. The hut operates year-round, though staffing and services vary seasonally; contact ahead if visiting November–March. Winter access requires mountain skills and appropriate gear. Summer is the main season, when the hut runs with full services and a warden on site.
Book direct by phone or email well in advance for July and August; aim for 4–6 weeks ahead. The hut fills quickly with groups during peak season. Smaller groups can often walk in without reservation outside July–August, but call first to confirm availability and meals. Payment is cash only; there is no mobile signal, so plan communication before arrival.
