Bifertenhütte

Bifertenhütte sits at 2,482m in the Glarus Alps, accessed most directly from Linthal via the Sernft Valley. The approach takes 3.5 to 4 hours on foot, climbing through alpine meadows and rocky terrain to reach the hut. You can also approach from the Panixerpass side, though this adds time and elevation gain. The SAC-managed hut serves as a base for ridge walks across the Glarus high country and approaches to peaks like Tödi (3,614m). Summer hikers use it as a staging point; winter access requires mountaineering skills and avalanche awareness.
The hut has 40 beds in shared dormitories. Half-board is standard—expect basic but adequate meals with vegetarian options available. Water comes from a spring. There's no shower. The hut is typically open from mid-June through mid-September, with possible winter weekends depending on demand. Check current opening dates before planning. The setting is exposed and windswept; walls are solid but the atmosphere is functional rather than cosy. This is a working hut for serious hikers, not a destination for comfort-seekers.
Book through the SAC website or contact the hut directly by telephone well ahead for July and August—6 weeks minimum. June, September, and early October have more availability. The hut fills quickly on weekends. Arrive by mid-afternoon to secure your meal slot. No credit cards are accepted; bring cash. The warden manages a small supply shop for emergency items only.
