Kistenpasshütte

Kistenpasshütte sits at 2,714m on the Kistenpass, a col between the Säntis massif and the Appenzell Alps in northeastern Switzerland. Reach it from Säntis (2,502m) in 1.5 hours via the ridge trail heading southeast. Alternatively, approach from the Appenzell side via Schäfler in 2.5–3 hours. The hut serves as a transit point on ridge walks and as a base for climbing the surrounding peaks.

The SAC Sektion Winterthur manages this small hut with 16 beds across basic dormitory rooms. Meals are prepared on-site; bring your appetite and book in advance if you want dinner. Drinking water is available. The hut operates year-round, though winter access depends on snow conditions and avalanche risk—check conditions before heading up in the colder months. Facilities are minimal but functional; expect no showers or charging points.

Phone ahead to confirm availability and to pre-order meals. July and August are busy; book 4–6 weeks in advance for these months. June, September, and early October are quieter but still reliable for accommodation. The hut fills quickly on weekends, especially when the weather is stable. Direct contact via phone is essential—there is no online booking system. Arrive with spare cash; card payments may not be reliably accepted at this altitude.
