Baita Nòva M.2040 (SO)

Baita Nòva sits at 2,040m in the Sondrio valleys of Lombardy's eastern Alps, on the border between Lombardy and Graubünden. Reach it from the Val Masino via the Rifugio Porcellizzo trail, a 4–5 hour walk gaining 800m. The approach crosses high pastures and talus slopes with solid paths throughout. Winter access is unreliable; plan visits June through September. The hut serves as a base for traverses into the granite peaks around Cima di Castello and approaches to Monte Disgrazia (3,661m), a serious mixed climb requiring rock and ice experience.
The hut offers 30 beds in simple dorm rooms and can provide meals with advance notice. Water comes from a spring. There's no electricity or mobile coverage—bring a headtorch. The basic setup reflects its working mountain hut status rather than tourist comfort. It operates year-round but staffing is seasonal; winter visits require prior coordination.
Contact the hut directly by post or through local Sondrio mountain guides. July and August are busy; book at least 6–8 weeks ahead for these months. June and September offer quieter conditions. Access by car to Bagni di Masino (the roadhead), then hike in. The hut is unmanned during extended winter periods, so confirm opening dates before traveling.
