Untermalfrag Zollhütte

Untermalfrag Zollhütte sits at 2,440m in the Prättigau valley south of Schaan. Reach it from the village of Schaan (850m) via the hamlet of Lüscha; the hiking route takes 4.5 to 5 hours and gains 1,590m. The path is steep but well-marked. In winter, access becomes difficult and the hut often closes. Summer is the practical season for visits.

The hut is small and basic, run by local keepers who maintain it year-round as a simple mountain shelter. It has sleeping capacity for around 20 people in dormitory rooms. Meals are available when staffed—expect simple fare and hearty portions. Water comes from a spring near the hut. Toilet facilities are basic but functional. The hut works as a base for walking to nearby summits like Säntis (2,502m) or for crossing the ridge to adjacent valleys. Most visitors treat it as a night stop rather than a destination in itself.

Book directly with the hut keeper or contact the SAC section responsible for maintenance. Phone lines can be unreliable at this elevation, so email is more dependable when available. July and August see the most traffic. Weekends fill faster than weekdays. The hut has no formal booking system—phone ahead the day before or arrive early in the afternoon to secure a bed. Bring cash; card payment options are limited or absent.
