Alp di Fora

Alp di Fora sits at 1,844m in the Leventina Valley in Ticino, deep in the southern Swiss Alps where the terrain shifts from limestone peaks to chestnut forests. Reach it from Rodi-Fiesso by hiking 2 hours up the Leventina trail, or approach from Chironico via a steeper 90-minute ascent. The location works as a base for day walks into the high pastures above the valley, or as a staging point on longer routes through the Piora Alps. Most hikers arrive in July and August, but spring and autumn offer quieter conditions with reliable weather windows.

The hut is a small, working alperie (mountain dairy) with 16 beds split between basic dorms. Hot meals are prepared by the hut keepers—there is no self-catering kitchen, so you eat what they cook. Expect simple mountain food: pasta, polenta, hearty soups, local cheeses. Water comes from the spring. The hut operates June through September, closing during heavy winter snow. Standards are deliberately modest: this is a working farm, not a resort. The pace of life here moves to valley time, not tourist schedules.
