Cabin Cadagno

Capanna Cadagno sits at 1,987m on the border between Ticino and Uri, in the remote Val Cadagno. The hut is a 3-hour hike from Göschenen station (Uri side) via the Göschenen Gorge, or 2.5 hours from Hospental. Most hikers approach from the north. The valley itself is isolated—there's no road access, and winter snow often blocks the route from November to May. This is genuine backcountry terrain, not a weekend destination from cities.

The hut sleeps 60 across dormitories and 10 private rooms. Meals are served daily during the season. There's reliable drinking water from the mountain spring. You cannot self-cater here. The setting is austere: you're surrounded by steep granite walls and the Cadagno glacier. The hut operates year-round, but January through March sees minimal traffic and can feel like having the place to yourself. Summer brings serious alpinists working routes on the Piz Cambrils and surrounding peaks.

Book by phone or email well ahead during July and August. Phone contact is essential since the hut's mail delivery is slow. Weekends fill up quickly in summer. Off-season (November to April) you can often book same-week with direct contact. The hut is managed by the Swiss Alpine Club. Expect no showers—water is precious at this elevation—and bring a headtorch for the hut's corridors.
