G.E.S.P. Refuge Monte Zucco

G.E.S.P. Rifugio Monte Zucco sits at 1140m in the Ticino region of southern Switzerland, above the Val Colla near Lugano. The hut is accessible year-round by hiking trails from the surrounding valleys. Most hikers approach from Bigorio or Aldesago, allowing roughly 2–3 hours of ascent depending on your starting point. The location works equally well as a base for day hikes in the region or as a stop on longer traverses through the southern Swiss Alps.

The rifugio accommodates 30 people across shared dormitory rooms. Meals are available, including dinner and breakfast, and the kitchen can prepare packed lunches for onward hikes. The hut operates throughout the year, though you should confirm opening dates and staffing outside summer months before visiting. Basic facilities include running water, heating, and sleeping blankets. The hut is managed by GESP and attracts a mix of day hikers and multi-day trekkers exploring the quieter trails of Ticino.

Book by phone well ahead, especially for weekends and July–August. The hut fills steadily during summer months and October (autumn hiking season), but shoulder seasons offer more flexibility. Call to confirm current opening status, meal availability, and special group arrangements. Arrival by late afternoon allows time to settle in before dinner service.
