Refuge Maria Luisa

Rifugio Maria Luisa sits at 2160m on the border between Ticino and Lombardy, in the Nera massif east of Airolo. Reach it from the Val Canaria in 3–4 hours via the Cima della Nera route, or approach from the Gotthard Pass area. The hut stands on established hiking terrain with views toward the Lepontine Alps. Most visitors arrive on foot from lower valleys.
The rifugio has 72 beds across multiple rooms and offers full meals (booking dinner ahead is essential). Showers are available—unusual for huts at this elevation. The CAI Sezione di Busto Arsizio manages it with a caretaker on-site during the summer season, roughly mid-June to late September. Winter closures are firm; check before planning off-season visits. The hut functions as a base for ridge walks and peak ascents in the surrounding ranges rather than as a stopping point on a major transit route.

June and September are less pressured. Arrive by early afternoon to secure your place and allow time for the evening meal service.
