About

Schutzhütte Val Milar sits at 2,215m in the Val Milar, a side valley in Uri. The hut is reached via a 2.5-hour hike from Realp (1,538m), following the Milar stream through larch forest before opening into alpine meadow. The approach is straightforward and well-marked, gaining 677m steadily without technical difficulty. Most parties day-hike from the valley, but the hut serves as a base for scrambles and climbs in the surrounding peaks, including ascents of Scherbadung (2,686m) and Zähmer Grat (2,752m).
Schutzhütte Val Milar is a basic shelter managed by the SAC/CAS. It accommodates roughly 20 people in dormitory space on a first-come, first-served basis (no reservations). The hut stocks blankets and provides a stove and cooking equipment; bring your own fuel and food. Water comes from a nearby spring. The shelter is unguarded and opens year-round, though winter access requires avalanche awareness and possibly ice axe skills. There are no paid meals or staff; this is a self-service refuge.
Book accommodation by arriving early or staying in Realp and day-hiking in. July and August see the most traffic. Winter visits need careful planning—assess conditions with local guides in Andermatt before setting out. The hut is free to use but donations support SAC maintenance.
