Almagellerhütte

Almagellerhütte sits at 2,894m in the Valais Alps, accessed via the Saas Valley. Most hikers approach from Saas-Grund (1,559m), a 4.5-hour climb gaining 1,335m. The trail follows the Almageller Bach stream through alpine meadows before steepening into scree and rocky terrain. In summer, a cable car from Saas-Grund to Plattjen (2,457m) cuts 1.5 hours from the approach. From Plattjen, the walk to the hut takes 1.5 hours via a well-marked path. Winter access is not reliable.
The hut is managed by the Saas-Grund community and accommodates 120 people in mixed dormitories. Hot meals are served daily; the kitchen provides hearty alpine fare suited to climbers and trekkers. Drinking water is available on-site. The hut operates year-round but is quietest November to April. Expect crowding in July and August, especially weekends. The location is ideal for climbers targeting peaks in the Mischabel range: Dom (4,545m), Täschhorn (4,533m), and Alphubel (4,206m). Experienced hikers also use it as a waypoint on multi-day traverses between Saas Valley and Zermatt.
Book 8-10 weeks ahead for July and August. Contact the hut directly by email or phone to check availability and confirm meal service. The hut may have periods of reduced staffing in shoulder seasons, so confirm opening dates before traveling. Winter visitors should contact ahead to verify access conditions and staffing levels.
