Weissmieshütte SAC

Weissmieshütte sits at 2726m in the Valais Alps, on the ridge between the Turtmann and Illgraben valleys. Most hikers reach it from Oberems in 4–5 hours, climbing steeply through forest then alpine meadows to the hut's exposed location. The route is well-marked but relentless. Approach from Turtmann village takes 5–6 hours and is less direct but passes through remote terrain. Winter access is avalanche-prone and requires mountain sense.
The hut is run by the Swiss Alpine Club and holds 125 beds across dormitory rooms. Meals are cooked to order—book dinner and breakfast when you reserve. Water comes from mountain springs; bring your own filter if you distrust it. There's no mobile signal and no WiFi. The hut stays open from June to October, weather permitting. The surrounding terrain is serious: rocky ridges, exposed scrambling, and sudden weather changes are the norm here.
Contact the hut directly by phone or email to reserve. Book at least 2–3 weeks ahead for July and August. July and early August are busiest; shoulder months (June, September, October) are quieter but weather is less reliable. The hut can fill even in shoulder season, so don't assume walk-ins will find beds. Bring a sleeping bag or rent bedding from the hut.
