About

The Bivouac du Dolent sits at 2667m on the slopes of Mont Dolent, in the heart of the Valais Alps where Switzerland meets France and Italy. Reach it from Champex-Lac (1480m) via the Trient Plateau and Col de la Forclaz de Montmin in approximately 5–6 hours of steady ascent. The approach is non-technical but sustained, with clear paths crossing alpine meadows and scree. In winter and early spring, avalanche risk makes this route dangerous—approach only with mountain experience and proper assessment.
The bivouac is a simple mountain shelter designed for self-reliance. It sleeps 12 people on basic bunks and provides a self-catering kitchen with stove and fuel, so bring your own food and cooking gear. There is no guardian, no meals service, and no running water—collect meltwater from nearby or carry it up. The shelter opens from late June through September when snow clears the approach. Outside these months, the route is mountaineering terrain requiring winter skills.
Book beds directly with SAC/CAS Section de la Gruyère-Bulle. Contact them at least 4 weeks ahead in July and August. The bivouac fills quickly with climbers using it as a base for Mont Dolent (3823m) or for crossing into France via Col de la Forclaz. Winter use is possible for experienced parties with avalanche knowledge, but verify current conditions and access with the section before attempting it.
