Refuge de Saint-Laurent

Refuge de Saint-Laurent sits at 2491m on the eastern edge of the Pennine Alps in Valais. Reach it from Le Châble in the Val de Bagnes via the Sentier des Alpages, a well-marked trail gaining 1400m in roughly 4 hours. Most parties start early and break the ascent at smaller refuges or mountain inns lower down. The hut works as a base for day hikes into the surrounding high pastures and as a waypoint on longer traverses of the Pennine backcountry.
The refuge operates as a straightforward mountain hut with simple dormitory beds and basic private rooms. The kitchen serves dinner and breakfast to overnight guests. Expect typical Alpine fare: soup, pasta, cheese, bread, coffee. Water comes from a spring; there's no electricity beyond hand-crank torches. The hut stays open year-round, though winter access requires mountaineering skills and avalanche awareness. SAC membership brings discounts on overnight rates. The guardian lives on-site and manages bookings directly.
Phone the hut directly to reserve beds. Book at least two weeks ahead for weekends in July and August. Single nights during shoulder seasons (June, September) are usually available without advance planning. The hut fills quickly during the main climbing season when parties use it as a staging point for higher peaks. Bring cash—card payment is unreliable at this elevation.
