About

The Rettensteinhütte sits at 1,366m in the Loferer and Leoganger Limestone Alps, a limestone range straddling the Salzburg-Tyrol border. Reach it from Saalfelden via the Vorderkaser valley, parking at Vorderkaser (960m) and hiking 4–5 hours to the hut. The trail follows a logging road then steeper terrain through mixed forest, reaching open alpine pasture in the final section. The hut makes a solid base for ridgeline walking across the Loferers, including approaches to Wildseeloder (2,117m) and routes toward the Hochkönig massif.
The OeAV-managed hut has 60 beds across multiple rooms. Meals focus on hearty Austrian Alpine fare. Hot showers are available. The hut operates year-round but is quieter October–March when you should confirm opening dates in advance. Summer Saturdays and school holidays require booking weeks ahead.
Book direct with the hut by phone (+43 6582 8239) or email. July and August fill 8–10 weeks prior; June and September are easier 4–6 weeks out. Weekdays outside school holidays are your best chance for walk-up availability.
