Sonnenalm

Sonnenalm sits at 1,680m on the Postalm plateau, a high meadow country east of Salzburg. Reach it from Anzenbach village (20km south of Salzburg) via a well-marked trail through mixed forest—2.5 hours on foot. Mountain bikers approach from the same trailhead in 45 minutes. The hut lies on the main east-west route across Postalm, making it a logical stop for multi-day ridge walks toward the Hochkönig massif or loops back toward the Tennengebirge.
The hut is family-run and modest. It offers 40 beds in mixed dorms and private rooms, with a small restaurant serving Austrian mountain food—Kaiserschmarrn, Erdäpfelpuffer, schnitzel. Water is plentiful. The hut operates year-round but caters mainly to summer hikers and winter ski-tourers. Expect a working farm atmosphere rather than polished Alpine hotel service. The building itself dates from the 1970s and has simple but clean facilities. Winter access depends on snow and avalanche conditions; confirm ahead if coming between November and March.
Book directly with the hut by phone or online at their website—aim for at least 2 weeks ahead in July and August. Mid-week slots fill less quickly. The hut is a solid refueling point rather than a destination in itself, so plan your multi-day route accordingly.
