Buchsteinhaus

Buchsteinhaus sits at 1,571m on the Buchstein in the Sölk Valley, a quieter corner of the Styrian Alps south of Schladming. Reach it from Sölk-Bad (start of the valley road) via a well-marked hiking trail that takes 2.5 to 3 hours. The approach is steady rather than steep, making it accessible for walkers with basic fitness. The hut anchors several multi-day routes through the Sölk and Rottenmanner Tauern ranges, including connections toward the Hochsöder and through to the Riesachsee.
The hut is run by the Austrian Alpine Club (OeAV) and operates year-round as a base for summer hiking and winter touring. It has 30 beds spread across dormitory rooms and a handful of doubles. The kitchen serves hearty evening meals and packed lunches; self-catering is not permitted. Expect straightforward mountain food—soups, stews, simple pasta—rather than anything elaborate. Water comes from the spring; the hut has no electricity and generates heat from a wood stove, so conditions are rustic but functional.
Book your stay direct with the hut operator well ahead for weekends and July-August. The Sölk Valley attracts fewer crowds than Austria's western valleys, but summer weekends still fill quickly. Winter touring season (March-April) is quieter. Bring cash for payment. The hut lies on an east-facing slope with good views down the valley; it's a working base rather than a resort hut, suited to walkers who value access to quiet high terrain over comfort.
