Goferhütte

The Goferhütte sits at 976m in the foothills of Styria's eastern Alps, well positioned for day hikes and longer traverses through the region. Access is straightforward: from the village of Stübing (near Graz), follow marked trails up the Gofergraben valley. Most hikers reach the hut in 1.5 to 2 hours from the road. The location makes it useful as a base for exploring the surrounding ridgelines and forested slopes rather than as a summit objective itself.
The hut is run by the Austrian Alpine Club (OeAV) Sektion Oesterr. Gebirgsverein and operates year-round as a simple mountain inn. It offers around 30 bed spaces in mixed and private rooms, a small dining room, and basic facilities typical of smaller Austrian huts. Meals are available during opening hours; bring cash as card payments are unreliable in this location. The hut attracts local hikers and families more than mountaineers, and the atmosphere is low-key and informal.
Book in advance during summer weekends and autumn, especially September and October when Styrian day-hikers are most active. Contact the hut directly by phone or through the OeAV website. Off-season (November to March) verify opening hours before traveling, as staffing can be reduced. The hut works well as a midweek base when you want reliable shelter without the crowds of busier regions.
