About
Grünseehütte sits at 2235m above Matrei in Osttirol, surrounded by accessible peaks and turquoise alpine lakes. The standard approach from Matrei takes 3.5–4 hours: head to the Rassiköpfl parking area, then follow the trail via Rassiköpfl (2261m) and past the Grünsee. The route is well-marked but steep in sections. An alternative approach from the Golling valley adds another hour but avoids some of the initial climb. Most parties arrive for lunch or afternoon tea rather than as their final destination for the day.
The hut holds 60 beds across simple dorms and smaller rooms. The OeAV-managed facility serves hearty three-course dinners, substantial breakfasts, and packed lunches on request. Hot showers and a small shop stocked with essentials are available. The hut sits in an excellent position for ridge walks and scrambles on the surrounding peaks—Rotgratspitze, Falkert, and Gollinghöhe are all within half-day range. Grünseehütte operates mid-June through late September, with earlier and later dates dependent on snow cover.
Book directly with the hut for July and August; contact them by phone or through the OeAV website. Mid-July to mid-August fills 6–8 weeks ahead, so confirm as soon as your plans solidify. Shoulder seasons (June, September) are quieter but still busy on weekends. Payment is cash-preferred but they accept card payments by prior arrangement.
