Krottenwaldhütte

Krottenwaldhütte sits at 1,140m in the Zillertal valley, a straightforward base for walking in the Tuxer and Zillertal Alps. Drive to Mayrhofen village and park near the Stillup valley road. The hut lies 2–3 hours' walk up the Stillupbach stream through mixed forest, following a well-marked trail that climbs steadily but never steeply. This makes it accessible to hikers with moderate fitness rather than a technical mountain approach.
The hut sleeps around 50 people in basic dormitory rooms. Meals focus on traditional Tyrolean fare—expect schnitzel, stews, and substantial breakfasts. Water comes from the mountain stream. The hut runs year-round, though quieter in winter when snow can make access tricky. Toilets and washing facilities are simple. There's no electricity or hot showers, which keeps costs low and the atmosphere unpretentious. The location works well as a staging point for day walks into the surrounding valleys or as a rest stop on longer hut-to-hut routes.
Book direct by phone or email 4–6 weeks ahead for summer weekends. July and August fill quickly. Winter visits need advance notice since the hut staffing varies. This is a working hut run by locals, not a glossy mountain resort, so expect practical rather than luxurious hospitality.
