Larcher Alm

Larcher Alm sits at 1,814m in the Zillertal, a major valley running south from Mayrhofen in Tyrol. The hut is reached via a straightforward 2-hour walk from Mayrhofen town, or 1.5 hours from the Ginkgo car park. The route gains 600m steadily through forest and alpine meadow on a well-marked trail. The final approach crosses open pasture with views north across the valley to Penken. This is accessible terrain for most hikers with decent fitness.
Larcher Alm is a working dairy farm operating as a summer hut, run by the OeAV (Austrian Alpine Club). It sleeps around 30 people in mixed dormitory accommodation. The kitchen serves substantial Tyrolean food: schnitzel, kaiserschmarrn, and seasonal game. Full board (breakfast, lunch, dinner) is available, as are basic supplies. Water comes from the mountain spring. There is no shower (this is a working alm, not a resort). The hut operates from late May through October, typically closing when snow makes the access problematic.
Book direct by phone or email well ahead in July and August. Summer weekends fill quickly. The hut fills on sunny Sundays when Mayrhofen valley-walkers make the trip up for lunch and coffee. Mid-week visits in June or September are far less crowded. This is a real working farm first, a hikers' hut second—expect a genuine Tyrolean experience rather than modern amenities.
