Plauener Hut

Plauener Hütte sits at 2,364m on the Zillertal side of the Zillertaler Alpen, between the Zemmgrund and Zillergrund valleys. Reach it from Mayrhofen in the Zillertal: walk from Ginzling (1,370m) via the Furtschagglboden meadow in 4 to 4.5 hours, or approach from the Zemmgrund side via Dornaubach in around 5 hours. Both routes are well-marked but involve steady elevation gain on mountain paths. The hut works well as a base for ridge walks across to neighbouring peaks or as a waypoint on longer Zillertal traverse routes.

The hut is managed by the Austrian Alpine Club (OeAV) and can sleep around 40 guests. Meals are available, with evening dinner and packed lunches for onward hiking. The hut has basic dorm and double rooms with communal washing facilities. Solar panels provide water heating. It operates from June to September in normal years, though opening can be delayed by late snow. The location above 2,300m means expect cold nights and rapid weather changes throughout the season.

Book directly with the hut—contact them by phone or email at least 6 weeks ahead for July and August, when it fills quickly with guided groups. Weekend demand peaks in July. Outside peak season (June and September), same-day booking is often possible. Phone ahead to confirm opening dates, as access depends on snow conditions. The hut has no public telephone, so plan accordingly.
