About
The Plauener Hütte sits at 2,363 m in the eastern Zillertal Alps of Tyrol, perched high above the Zillergründl reservoir in the Kuchelmoos cirque, directly beneath the glaciated peaks of the Reichenspitze group. Built in 1898/99, it is owned and run by the Plauen-Vogtland section of the German Alpine Club (DAV). The hut is best known as the classic base for climbing the Reichenspitze (3,303 m) and neighbouring three-thousanders, as well as a key stage on high-level Zillertal traverses. It offers roughly 28 beds in rooms plus a 43-place dormitory, with a small winter room left open when the hut is closed. The kitchen focuses on regional Tyrolean cooking, and the hut takes part in the "So schmecken die Berge" quality initiative; showers are available. It is staffed from around mid-June to the end of September. The most common approach starts from Mayrhofen-Bärenbad at the end of the Zillergrund toll road, a moderate walk of roughly 2.5–3 hours. A shorter option climbs from the Zillergründl reservoir dam in about 1.5 hours, reachable by toll road or the seasonal bus to the Staumauer.

The hut is staffed roughly from mid-June to the end of September. Outside the summer season a small winter room is left unlocked for emergency shelter.
The shortest approach starts at the Zillergründl reservoir dam (Staumauer), reachable via the Zillergrund toll road or the seasonal bus, and takes about 1.5 hours on foot. The main route from Mayrhofen-Bärenbad takes around 2.5 to 3 hours.
The approaches to the hut are graded moderate on good mountain paths and are manageable for reasonably fit walkers, with the reservoir route the gentlest. Continuing beyond the hut to the Reichenspitze, however, is a difficult glacier tour that requires alpine equipment and experience.
