Gasselhütte

The Gasselhütte sits at 1,211m in the Sengsengebirge range, northeast of Steyr in Upper Austria. Reach it from the village of Weyer-Markt by hiking 2 hours up the Große Klause valley on a marked trail. The hut sits on a quiet plateau above the gorge, with views toward the limestone ridges of the surrounding massif. Summer day-hikers use it as a base for loops through beech forest and alpine meadow.
The hut is small, with capacity for around 30 guests in dormitory rooms. The OeAV-affiliated operator serves simple Austrian fare at lunch and dinner. Expect basic facilities: water is from the hut's own spring, heating comes from a wood stove, and there are flush toilets. The hut opens year-round but is quietest October to April. Book meals in advance if visiting as a day-hiker. The kitchen can accommodate dietary needs if you give notice.
Book directly by email or phone. Summer weekends and school holidays (especially July to August) fill quickly—contact at least 3 weeks ahead for those periods. Outside peak season, a few days' notice usually suffices. Pay by cash or bank transfer. The hut has no mobile coverage, so call during their office hours.
