Gmundner Hut

Gmundner Hütte sits at 1660m in the Totes Gebirge, east of Gmunden in Upper Austria. The standard approach takes 2.5 hours from Rindbach via the Rettenbach valley—a steady climb through forest and alpine meadow. A steeper variant from the Rettenbach car park cuts the hike to 1.5 hours. Both routes follow marked paths. The hut makes sense as a base for exploring the limestone plateau above or as a stage on longer traverses through the Totes Gebirge. Weather can change fast at this elevation; bring rain gear year-round.
The OeAV-managed hut has 45 beds in a mix of dorms and smaller rooms. Half-board is standard—dinner, bed, and breakfast included. Vegetarian options are available. The hut serves as a working shepherd's lodge, which shapes its character and meal times. Water comes from a spring. Phone and email booking is required. The hut operates year-round but is quieter from November to March; check ahead for winter opening in bad seasons.
