Sonnsteinhütte
2.5About
The hut manages around 50 beds in simple rooms with 2 to 4 bunks each. Meals are traditional Austrian fare—soups, stews, schnitzel—cooked fresh daily and served in the evening and at breakfast. Tap water is reliable. The hut has no WiFi, which suits hikers wanting genuine downtime. The Sonnsteinhütte operates year-round but is busiest July through September. It's managed by the Austrian Alpine Club (OeAV), so OeAV members get discounted bed rates.
Book directly by calling or emailing well ahead for July and August—at least 6 weeks. The hut fills quickly during peak summer weeks and on summer weekends. Weekday visits outside July give better availability. Payment is cash only; bring euros. The guardians are accustomed to walkers and can advise on nearby routes and weather conditions.
