Traunsteinhaus

Traunsteinhaus sits at 1,580m on the eastern flank of Traunstein in the Salzkammergut. The hut is accessed from Ebensee via the Trauntal valley trail, a steady 4-hour climb through forest that gains 900m elevation. The approach is straightforward and well-marked, making it a popular base for traversing the limestone ridges around Traunstein (1,691m) and connecting to neighboring peaks like Hochkogel. The location places you between the Salzkammergut lakes below and the higher Alpine terrain above.
The hut operates year-round and has capacity for around 40 guests. It offers simple dormitory and private rooms with basic heating. Meals are served daily; the kitchen prepares hearty mountain fare using local ingredients. The hut provides hot showers and has a small bar area. The building is managed by the Austrian Alpine Club (OeAV) and maintains working relationships with the German Alpine Club (DAV) for reciprocal member benefits. Facilities are functional rather than luxurious—expect the standard for mountain huts in this region.
Book directly by email or phone at least 2-3 weeks ahead, especially for weekends and July-August. The hut fills quickly during school holidays and good weather windows. Winter visits require advance notice as staffing can be limited. Arrive with cash as card payment is not always available. Check weather conditions before traveling; the exposed ridge sections demand good visibility.
