Berghütte Hornklause

Hornklause sits at 1070m in the Großes Walsertal valley in Vorarlberg, a quiet corner of the Austrian Alps well away from the main tourist routes. Reach it from the village of Sonntag via a steady 2-hour hike through mixed forest and alpine meadow. The trail climbs roughly 500m and is well marked throughout. You can also approach from Fontanella in the south. The hut works as a base for day hikes across the Walsertal's ridge system and onward traverses toward the Säntis massif.
Hornklause manages 16 beds across several small rooms. Meals are simple and hearty—expect Vorarlberg alpine fare cooked on-site. Water comes from the spring. There is no shower, but washing facilities are available. The hut runs seasonally from May through October, closing during the heavier snow months. It's unmanned most of the time, so you need to book ahead and collect keys from the warden or managing Alpine Club contact before arrival. Phone signal is unreliable at the hut.

If you plan to visit during peak season, contact at least 4–6 weeks ahead. Weekday and shoulder-season visits are much easier to arrange. The hut is popular with families and those seeking quieter, less-crowded alternatives to busier valley huts.
