Almagmach

Almagmach sits at 1,140m in the Allgäu Alps, reached from the village of Oberstdorf by hiking south into the Oytal valley. The approach takes roughly 2 hours on a well-marked trail that gains 300m steadily through mixed forest. The hut serves as a base for day walks into the surrounding valleys and peaks, with direct access to routes toward the Schartschrofen and deeper exploration of the Oytal.
The hut accommodates around 40 guests in mixed dormitory rooms. Dinners focus on hearty Bavarian fare; breakfast and packed lunches are also available. Showers are on-site. The season runs year-round, though winter access depends on snow conditions and avalanche forecasts. It operates as a DAV hut, so membership brings modest discounts on overnight rates.
Book directly with the hut operator. July and August require advance reservation—aim for 4–6 weeks ahead. Weekends fill quickly throughout summer. May through October sees steady traffic from hikers using the hut as a base camp rather than a transit point.
