Gundalpe

Gundalpe sits at 1502m in the Allgäu Alps, accessed from the village of Oberstdorf. The hut lies on the main hiking route through the Oytal valley. Most walkers reach it in 2–2.5 hours from Oberstdorf via a well-marked path that climbs steadily through beech forest and alpine meadows. The trail is popular but manageable year-round when snow conditions allow.

The hut holds 31 beds across simple, multi-share rooms. It serves hearty Bavarian meals and basic breakfast. No showers are available—expect washroom facilities only. Gundalpe operates as a working alp with cattle in summer, adding to the experience. The DAV manages the hut and keeps it open year-round, though staffing is lighter in winter months. Stock supplies at Oberstdorf before arriving; the hut has limited provisions for sale.

Book by phone directly with the hut, especially for weekends in July and August when capacity fills quickly. Summer weekends need 4–6 weeks' notice. Mid-week visits outside school holidays are easier to arrange. Winter bookings are simpler but confirm opening status before traveling. The hut charges standard DAV member rates if you're affiliated with a club; non-members pay slightly more. Arrive before sunset; the final approach has no lighting.
