Staufner Haus

Staufner Haus sits at 1634m on the Staufen, a prominent peak in the Allgäu Alps above the village of Oberstaufen. Most hikers reach it via the direct route from Oberstaufen (2.5 hours) or from Bad Hindelang to the south (3 hours). Both approaches gain roughly 1000m but follow well-marked trails through beech forest and alpine pasture. The hut works as a base for ridge walking and longer traverses across the northern Allgäu, or as a summit stop on the way up from lower valleys.
The DAV-run hut holds around 60 beds split between private rooms and dormitories. The kitchen serves full dinners and hearty breakfasts. There's a small bar and a sun terrace facing north toward the limestone cliffs of the Säntis massif. Water comes from a spring on the mountain. The hut operates year-round, though expect limited staffing and services on weekdays outside July and August. Mobile reception is unreliable.
Book by phone directly with the hut, especially for weekend stays and any time from June through September. July and August fill fast—aim for 4–6 weeks ahead. Weekday visits outside peak season don't require advance notice. The hut sits just inside the DAV network, so members get a small discount on bed rates.
