Kärlinger Haus

Kärlinger Haus sits at 1,638m in the Berchtesgaden Alps, above the village of Schönau. Reach it in 2.5 to 3 hours on foot from the Königssee car park via the Schönauer Tal valley, or approach from Bad Reichenhall via the Hochthörl pass. The route climbs steadily but remains well-marked and non-technical. Winter access is possible but requires avalanche awareness and winter gear.
The DAV-managed hut has 50 beds across multiple rooms, a large common area, and a dining hall. Hot showers are available. The kitchen serves three meals daily: breakfast, lunch (often light), and a set dinner. Half-board and full-board packages suit multi-day stays. The hut opens year-round but operates with reduced capacity in winter—call ahead to confirm. Summer crowds peak in July and August. Group bookings need advance notice.
Book directly by phone with DAV Sektion Berchtesgaden. Book at least 4 weeks ahead for July and August weekend stays, especially Saturdays. May through October requires 2-3 weeks' notice. Winter and shoulder season bookings can often be made 1-2 weeks ahead. Confirm your arrival time when you call. The hut holds reservations until 6 p.m. unless you've notified them of a late arrival.
